I simply wanted to answer the question and encourage the poster to give them a try. It didn't occur to me to tell the poster the games he asked about were irrelevant. Panzer Leader and Luftwaffe are, in terms of war games, easy. I taught my son to play SL when he was 10. My friend and I thought ourselves SL in 8th grade. SL is probably medium complexity and it's programmed instructions make it less daunting. SL is the more complex of the 3 but none of the named games are hard to learn and they are certainly not hard to play once learned. The poster asked if these specific games are hard. To dismiss Avalon Hill as a whole because they didn't benefit from modern day design techniques or because some of their games were bad or overly complex strikes me as a bit of an injustice especially given how much AH advanced the hobby.īut regardless of my analogy, the poster asked about 3 specific AH games. There were tons of bad games then as there are now. Newer technologies and ideas always arise for presenting the entertainment but this doesn't really take away from the great works that came before these advances. I think games are a form of entertainment and very much follow the same basic ideas as other forms. You will be amazed by how many of those old concepts and mechanics you will still see in more modern games. Playing these classic games will give you wonderful insight and appreciation for more modern games.
AVALON HILL SQUAD LEADER MANUALS
If you can get past the simple graphics and somewhat bland presentation of the manuals I think you will find that these games are true gems. I just wasn't very interested in the subject matter. I don't remember it being at all difficult. I played it a few times with my college dorm mate. If you want a more modern incarnation I think White Star Rising is the best modern alternative to this game system available. I enjoy Panzer Leader a bit more than the other two. They are very simplistic but allow you to focus on tactics. Panzer Blitz, Panzer Leader and The Arab Israeli War all share the same basic system and are very easy to learn. They are extremely well done and offer fantastic manuals. If you find you do like SL you should check out the ASL starter kits. Squad Leader was the first tactical game I taught my son when he was 10 and he had no problem grasping it. I always felt ASL set the ratio of rules-to-fun past my liking but clearly others don't mind this. However, if you can get a clean copy of Squad Leader (eBay usually has some available) it is quite a bit less involved. The Advance Squad Leader Starter Kits use this same approach. Once you master those you can move on to the next chunk of rules and another scenario to test what you've learned. The original Squad Leader uses programmer instructions to allow you to bite off small amounts of rules and play scenarios that only use the rules you have learned. If boardgames have classics then Squad Leader and Panzer Blitz have certainly earned their oscars. But all the wonderful bombastic spectacle of the latest Marvel super hero flick doesn't reduce in any way the enjoyment of Casablanca or Citizen Kane. I guess it's like saying old movies can't compete with modern movies. They probably can't compete with modern games in many ways. The games you mention are not hard to learn.
